Body Worlds Amsterdam

Body Worlds Amsterdam Attraction

Body Worlds Amsterdam is a museum and attraction in one. It explores the human body through a process called plastination or polymer preservation, which takes a real body and preserves it so it never decays.

Visitors can then view the human body in all its glory, both inside and out. The Body Worlds attraction is one that will educate, amaze and leave you feeling you know your body that bit more upon leaving.

What will I see at Body Worlds Amsterdam?

Currently Body Worlds in Amsterdam is focussing on ‘The Happiness Project’. This explores what it means to the body to be happy. The attraction does change themes from time to time but unlike the travelling exhibition that has arrived in cities around the globe and then moved on, the Body Worlds exhibition in Amsterdam is permanent.

The tour starts with you going up in an elevator to the sixth floor and then working your way back down through the exhibit, ending up in the basement.

200 bodies

As you journey through the building you will see almost 200 real human bodies that have been preserved using plastination. This technique replaces liquids with silicone polymers which allows the bodies to be viewed as they are inside and out, perfectly preserved. It is quite a humbling sight.

Each floor of the Body Worlds exhibit focusses on different parts of the body so you will feel like you have seen it all by the time you reach the basement.

Educating but fun

It would be fair to say the exhibit is very educational, it can be suitable for families and children (Body Worlds recommend that parents and schools decide if the children are ready to experience it) and really is something quite unique to experience and enjoy. Although educational, you should find the exhibit entertaining and interactive. Your visit can last anywhere from an hour to four hours depending on how deeply you want to delve into the workings of the human body.

Bad Habits

A very educational section looks at how bad habits can affect the body and how diseases can occur. If you want to break a habit like smoking then this could be a good place to understand what it is doing to you.

InBody Test

At the end of the tour you can have a painless body scan (included in the ticket price) called the InBody Test. This scan is a lot more detailed than a BMI and looks much deeper into which aspects of your body you should focus on.

This test actually costs €35 in the real world and is used in the medical fields, sports and fitness. As it is included in the price of your admission and takes around a minute it is a real bonus of visiting Body Worlds.

Body Worlds Amsterdam accessibility

Accessibility is good at Body Worlds, all except the basement. This is a small part of the exhibit, but unfortunately is not accessible for all.

The tour starts at the top via an elevator and works down but is accessible for people who use a wheelchair, walkers and mobility scooters.
