Music at Concertgebouw Amsterdam

The Royal Concertgebouw is world renowned for its acoustics alongside the beauty of the building itself. Concertgebouw is translated as Concert Building which is not exactly the romantic translation required to inspire music lovers and does not do justice to what is a stunning architectural design.

The resident orchestra is known as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, although they do travel all over the world, as well as playing here. The Concertgebouw also hosts soloists and other orchestras throughout the year. In the past rock bands like Pink Floyd and The Who have played here, though classical music dominates now.

When are the concerts

Most evenings will see a concert hosted at Concertgebouw. There are also Saturday matinee concerts and Sunday morning concerts. During off-peak season (winter) there are free concerts held on a Wednesday afternoon, so if you are visiting in the colder months this is a great free thing to do in Amsterdam. You will still need to book a ticket for the free concerts though.

The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam has a main hall and a recital hall, so you can find more intimate shows/events, as well as larger blockbuster concerts. Most of these are very popular and often sell out early, but you can sometimes find late tickets on the day, so it’s always worth checking.

For a full schedule of upcoming concerts visit the Concertgebouw website.

Dress code at Concertgebouow

As a visitor to Amsterdam, you are likely packing for comfort during your days exploration of the city and may look at the Concertgebouw and think wouldn’t it be nice to end the day with an amazing concert, shame I didn’t bring my tux or little black dress. Well, you need not worry, there is no dress code for entry to the Concertgebouw, though we would probably avoid tracksuits and trainers.

Children and concerts

There are special child friendly concerts put on by the Concertgebouw but for all the other concerts the minimum age for children is 6 years and over.
