When looking at cities around Amsterdam to visit, Almere does not immediately leap to the top of the list. But, Almere is something of a hidden modern gem that deserves exploration.

If you are looking for a deep exploration of history then there are other cities like DelftUtrecht and Haarlem that will suit you better, but if you love nature, beaches, modern architecture and good shopping, then Almere will be right up your street.

Almere is in the Flevoland province, just 20 minutes from Amsterdam. It has multiple beaches, a nature reserve and is surrounded by water, so there is plenty to see and do.

Best way to Almere from Amsterdam

Getting to Almere from Amsterdam is very easy. It is not that far away at all (22km) and you will find a lot of commuters live in Almere and work in Amsterdam, travelling in and home by train each working day.

Train

The most convenient and fastest way to travel from Amsterdam to Almere is by train. You can take a train from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Almere Centrum Station, which is the main train station in Almere. Trains run frequently throughout the day, and the journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the type of train you take. There are intercity trains which are direct and the fastest and also a stopping train that will take a bit longer, but give you more options on where to get off in Almere, like nearer the beaches.

Bus

Another option is to take a bus from Amsterdam to Almere. Several bus routes connect the two cities, operated by various regional and national bus companies. The journey by bus typically takes longer than by train, but it can be a convenient option if you prefer bus travel or if you’re traveling to a specific area in Almere not directly served by the train.

Car

If you prefer to drive, you can also rent a car or use your own to travel from Amsterdam to Almere. The two cities are connected by the A1 and A6 motorways. The drive takes approximately 30-40 minutes.

Almere is the youngest city in the Netherlands. As such you will not find masses of history on your visit. What you will find though is a modern city designed for how people live today. Almere is not a huge population crushed into a small area, but rather a city built around the natural landscape. Being so new, it was created in 1975, the striking modern architecture is a real highlight.

Nature Reserves and Parks

Almere is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including the Oostvaardersplassen Nature Reserve, which is known for its diverse bird species and wild horses. The city also boasts several parks and green spaces, such as the Beatrixpark and the Lumièrepark, where you can enjoy walking, cycling, picnicking and wildlife spotting.

There are 8 beaches in Almere, so you are spoilt for choice if sunbathing and swimming/boating is your thing. Being only 20-minutes from Amsterdam and with its own beaches and nature reserves, makes an interesting proposition for using Almere as a holiday base from which to explore Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague.

Most of the beaches are what we might call large lake beaches, so are considered very safe for swimming.
