Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam

Discover Modern Contemporary Art in Amsterdam

Visiting Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam allows you to experience the stunning featured collections by Matisse, Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol. The Stedelijk Museum holds over 700 art and design objects including photography, sculpture, prints and drawings. It also features moving image and sound instalations.

The museum has a library which has a vast collection of publications of modern and contemporary art (by appointment only).

The Stedelijk Museum was founded in 1874 and is situated in Museumplein 10 next to the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. After a nine-year renovation, it reopened in 2012 with an impressive new wing known as the Bathtub.

This is why this area is so popular for visitors to Amsterdam. You can visit three highly significant museums all within easy reach of each other. If you decide to do all three museums in one day, then make sure you have some very comfortable shoes as there is so much to see in each one.

Tickets for Stedelijk Museum

Tickets for the Stedelijk Museum are available online for €22.50 for adults. Students and CJP are €10. Tickets are valid for a year from the day of purchase, this helps with any Covid restrictions that may come into place, forcing the museum to close. If you have a valid ticket you can rebook a time for a later date. Not ideal for a visitor on a short break, but it is always best to plan ahead to buy your ticket regardless.

The only free ticket is for children and young people up to 19, but they must have a paying adult with them. Other ways to gain free entrance include Museumkaart holders, Friends of the Stedelijk Museum, Young Stedelijk members, Rembrandtkaat, ICOM, CIMAM, Stadspas, I amsterdam City Card, Amsterdam Pass, Holland Pass, Stedelijk Lerarenpas and Bank Giro Lottery VIP-Kaart.

Strictly speaking the I amsterdam City Card does give you free entry, but you have already paid towards the entry fee within the card cost itself. However, this card does give you many more discounts and entrance to other major attractions too. You can book your ticket online when using an I amsterdam City Card or one of the other membership schemes by selecting the ‘I already have an entrance ticket/card/voucher’ option.

As said on our other pages, most popular museums and attractions are operating an online only pre-booked timeslot for their tickets. Stedelijk Museum operates on a full day ticket basis, so your ticket is valid for the whole day and not a timeslot. This saves any manic rushing around to get there at the right time. There are also now opportunities to buy on the door, so although it’s best to be prepared, you may be able to enter on a whim too.

As a visitor to Amsterdam, we recommend planning ahead to make sure you do not miss out on entry to one of your desired attractions/museums in the time you have available.

Where is the Stedelijk Museum

The Stedelijk Museum is in the south of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Zuid). It sits within Museum Square and has the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum as neighbours. The Museumplein is a huge draw for culture and art lovers. It has an underground car park and supermarket and the space is often used for events and festivals. The pond is often transformed into an artificial ice rink in the winter.

Photography at Stedelijk Museum

Photography without a flash or tripod is currently allowed at the Stedelijk Museum for personal use only. However, looking through their website there is conflicting instructions on if you can take pictures or not during the pandemic restrictions. Personally, we think it is likely you will be allowed to take pictures or video for personal use, if you are not lingering in an area or causing an obstruction. But, we suggest you have in your mind that during the pandemic there is always the possibility you will not be able to take photos or video during your visit.

When is the best time to visit Stedelijk Museum

As you are now pre-booking tickets online and numbers are limited during the Coronavirus, you may find that the museum feels less busy at anytime. However, visitors are allowed to stay as long as they want once inside the museum (unless instructed otherwise), so if you are booking a timeslot between 11am and 3pm you may find it busier due to people staying for lunch in the cafe or that time being previously the most popular time to visit in the past.

During high season it is probably a good bet to book your tickets for before 11am and after 3pm, if you want to avoid the busiest times in the museum. Stedelijk suggests that the mornings are always less busy.

The only way to guarantee your entry to Stedelijk Museum though is to book your tickets online.

Night Museum Stedelijk Museum

Stedelijk Museum features in the annual Amsterdam Night Museum event. This takes place every year in November and you can visit over 60 museums after dark.

Where can I leave my bags

Currently the cloakroom at the museum is unsupervised and lockers are not available. So, do not bring your luggage with you and expect to be able to store it. Usually you can leave jackets, umbrellas, small bags and small rucksacks at the cloakroom, but this is totally at your own risk. Due to coronavirus it is strongly recommended to bring as little with you as possible for your visit. Handbags are permitted in the museum (A3 max size). There are luggage service points around the Museum Square where you can leave your luggage before entering the museum.
