Beatrixpark

Beatrixpark Amsterdam for a slice of calm

Beatrixpark Amsterdam offers up a little respite from the busy city. Whilst not as big as Vondelpark, Beatrixpark offers an equally attractive green space for locals and visitors to relax within.

Situated in the south of Amsterdam, it is a short walk from Van Gogh Museum and even shorter walk from the RAI Convention Centre (it’s at the back of it). Other visitor attractions nearby include the quirky The Upside Down.

How to get to Beatrixpark

Beatrixpark is located in the south of Amsterdam, further south than Museumplein and the famous museums of Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum. It is also quite close to Amstelpark if you wanted to explore a couple of Amsterdam parks/gardens in one go.

A bike ride is probably the nicest way to get there, but the iconic Amsterdam trams are also hard to beat just for the experience. As Beatrixpark is a little further out than Vondelpark, you’ll find more locals use the park than tourists, making it that much quieter.

If you are going to get the tram from Amsterdam Central, then chose Tram Line 24 and it is a pretty straight route right through to Gerrit V.D. Veenstraat. From this stop you can be at the park in 9-minutes on foot.

You could also use Line 52 of the Metro stopping at Europaplein and then taking the 10-minute walk to the park.

We do say Amsterdam is a walkable city and that does stand true, but to give you an idea, from the centre of Amsterdam, around Dam Square to Beatrixpark would take you about 50 minutes to walk.

Obviously if you find yourself closer by already, such as Museumplein, you can walk there in around 20-25 minutes, but with Vondelpark so close by to Museum Square, few visitors do.

Museumplein near Beatrixpark

Museumplein is a public square in Amsterdam about 20-25minutes walk from Beatrixpark, though just a few minute tram ride away. Museumplein is home to some of the biggest museums in the city:

  1. Rijksmuseum – This is the national museum of the Netherlands, which houses an extensive collection of Dutch art and history.
  2. Van Gogh Museum – Museum dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh containing the largest collection of his paintings and drawings in the world.
  3. Stedelijk Museum – Devoted to modern and contemporary art and design.
  4. Moco Museum – Privately owned modern and contemporary art museum.

Museumplein also houses The Concertgebouw, which is one of the best concert halls in the world. You can attend a classical music concert, jazz performance and sometimes even pop concerts here.

Most visitors to Museumplein will stop in Vondelpark as it is so close by, but if you crave a little more solitude and less crowds then the trip to Beatrixpark will reward you.

Beatrixpark Things to do

A Green Haven in the City

Beatrixpark, named after the former Dutch Queen Beatrix, is situated in the southern part of Amsterdam. It is not a huge park like Vondelpark, but provides more than ample space for visitors to unwind, relax, and reconnect with nature. The park was designed by famous Dutch landscape architect Jacoba Mulder, and it opened in 1938.

Flora and Fauna

One of the park’s highlights is its beautiful collection of plants and trees. Beatrixpark is home to various tree species, including chestnuts, elms, and oaks, providing shade and adding to the park’s overall charm. Spring and summer bring an explosion of color as flowers bloom throughout the park, creating a vibrant and picturesque setting for visitors. Rhododendron burst into a stunning display of blossoms in the spring. In Autumn the trees turn orange and red and feel appropriately painterly.

For nature lovers and birdwatchers, Beatrixpark provides an opportunity to connect with local wildlife. In addition to the waterfowl on the pond, the park is also home to various species of birds, squirrels, and other small animals, making it an excellent spot for observing and appreciating urban wildlife.

Beatrixpark is a good park in Amsterdam for dog owners, as it is quieter with wide open green spaces.

Art and Sculptures

Beatrixpark boasts an impressive collection of sculptures and art installations, some of which date back to its creation in the 1930s. The artworks blend harmoniously with the park’s surroundings, creating a delightful fusion of culture and nature. One of the sculptures features in the kids playground, which they can explore and climb all over to their hearts content.

A Haven for Recreation

Whether you’re an active visitor or prefer a more relaxed experience, Beatrixpark has something to offer. There is a playground and wading pool for children. The open green spaces are plenty big enough for games with friends and you’ll often see people practicing yoga and exercising within the park.

Events and Activities

Throughout the year, Beatrixpark hosts various small events and activities. There is also a Beatrixpark park run.

Escape the City, Embrace the Calm

Beatrixpark stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s commitment to maintaining green spaces within the city. Though they did give up a chunk of the original Beatrixpark to build the RAI Convention Centre.

It’s a place where locals come to escape the pressures of modern life, offering a breath of fresh air and a glimpse of Dutch horticultural excellence. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil retreat, a spot for outdoor activities, or a place to admire art in nature, Beatrixpark is a perfect escape.
