Weather in Amsterdam

What is the weather like in the Netherlands and Amsterdam

The Netherlands is located in northwestern Europe. It is part of the low countries or Benelux, which is made up of Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg. It is not part of Scandinavia as is often mistakenly thought.

The Netherlands sits well above the equator, so in simple terms the weather is what could best be described as changeable. Amsterdam is blessed with seasons, so it will not be sunshine all year round, or indeed cold and wet all year round either.

With changeable seasons comes the beauty of fallen red leaves along the canals, ice skating on the canals (when it’s deemed safe) and swimming in the lakes and at the beach in the summer.

The Netherlands has a mild climate. This means it can be warm in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s weather is very similar to the UK’s.

Weather in Amsterdam in different seasons

With a mild climate shared by most of northern Europe, the Netherlands enjoys a variety of weather throughout the year. In the Spring and Summer there can be long dry and hot spells punctuated by rainfall and in the winter you can expect rain, snow and cold snaps.

Strangely, April is actually the driest month in Amsterdam, with November being the wettest. The hottest is as you would expect August and the coldest is January.

The weather though is changeable. Although forecasts are much more accurate now, there is no getting away from the fact that the weather can and does change often. And then there is climate change.

Although most people visit in Spring for the Amsterdam tulips and summer for the sunshine, Amsterdam is incredibly beautiful in Autumn, as the trees along the canal change colour. In winter you can enjoy Christmas festivals, new year celebrations, light festivals and if your lucky snow and ice on the canals.
